Parkland Student Is Free of Shrapnel at Last, While a Grieving Parkland Dad Takes on the NRA’s Oliver North

Three months after the school massacre in Parkland, Florida, shooting survivor Sam Fuentes celebrated being free of shrapnel at last, posting a selfie on Twitter with a bandaged face:

My face is finally shrapnel free! Regardless of the fact I look like I lost a fight, inside I’m winning in a way. I’ve been struggling so hard to love my face again, thank you for all your support.

Fuentes spoke at the “March for Our Lives” rally in Washington, DC, earlier this year, calling for gun control in front of a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people. Her speech went viral after she threw up onstage—then continued speaking after the incident. She said in her speech,

Our mission is simple and our ambitions are unbeatable. Let’s keep the guns out of the hands of the wrong people and keep them in the hands of the safe and reasonable.

The new president of the National Rifle Association, Oliver North, compared advocates of gun control to civil terrorists in an interview last week. But Fred Guttenberg, the father of a 14-year-old girl killed in shooting, has offered a powerful rebuttal.

Newsweek reports that Guttenberg said,

Less than three months ago, I was a normal Parkland parent who had two kids. Now I have one. The only thing I have done is exercise my right to fight for my family’s safety. No cyber warfare. No nothing. We’ve just effectively utilized facebook and twitter to drive a message. If I’m not mistaken, we have a presidential administration that did the same thing.

We’re not criminal civil terrorists. We’re people with a broken heart. But the NRA and people like Oliver North, to them, it’s a job. They could retire and go on with their life. I can’t, because my daughter isn’t here.

Guttenberg has founded two organizations in his daughter’s memory and has been traveling the country to pressure lawmakers to enact additional gun control legislation.

Guttenberg also took his complaint against North and the NRA to Twitter. He posted:
